When we interact in our daily life, it’s face to face or person to person. Online, we interact profile to profile. Creating a profile is on the one hand a process of self-presentation, and on the other hand a reflection and management of self images. What kind of things one is going to put up there? How do you build your character and identifications through words, videos, and images? Online social network sites is an experimental laboratory that people can see clear how socialization and characterization being built.
It is true that social network sites provide possibilities to expend the personal networks, but the expansion is limited in self-choosing selections of age, race, income, education level, interests and physical appearance. The expansion is more horizontal than vertical. A social network site is not totally a wonderful paradise that people can get rid of existing social norms. People tend to match, or befriend with others that have share backgrounds. These sites overcome the geographical barrier but not the sociological hierarchies.
